Meee and my Eee!

My initial impression of the Eee as a dandy lil’ machine still stands after several days of use. Yesterday, after firing up my averatec laptop and waiting for the hamsters to churn their Norton-rusted wheel, I, again, appreciated the superhero (at least for me) speed of my Asus’s Linux OS. Actually appreciated is not quite accurate; giddy with glee is more spot-on!

Here are a few shots, including one with a Barcelona paperback guidebook laying on top for a size comparison.

After plodding about in various electronic stores, I finally settled upon a portable dvd player bag (good enough) to carry my Eee. Sure the neoprene sleeve was nice and sleek (expensive), but it lacked handles. I bought a Case Logic bag with a top zipper and two external pockets made for a 10.2″ dvd player, which makes it a tad roomy for my Asus. Once I collect enough pennies in my coin jar, I may spring for a leather case specifically designed for the Eee.

Accessories aside, my Eee’s Open Office’s word processor and spreadsheet programs are intuitive and similar to their Window’s cohorts. I have opened, modified, and saved documents in both applications and have been pleased with their functionality. In fact, the word processor program has a nifty toolbar that allows you to move bulleted items into a sublevel at the click of the mouse. No tabbing (annoying auto-formatting) involved!

Today, I poked my SD card from my camera into the Eee’s slot and, presto, I was able to view my pictures. The photo manager provides many options for exporting photos. I just wish I could modify the photo’s size within the application. (Maybe there is a way?)

Overall, I give my Asus Eee PC 2G five out of five stars!

Lions and tigers, riots and droughts

As my departure date draws closer, I wanted to transform Paris from the fictional city that has rattled around in my mind for six months into a real place. So, I searched google images and discovered the Eiffel Tower, of course, and a BBC video of fisherman rioting against the police due to the rising cost of oil–a bit unexpected. Link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/7413332.stm. I admit ignorance, but I don’t understand what the police have to do with oil prices; I will research further.

On the same BBC page, I found a clip showing a depleted water reservoir outside of Barcelona. Ruins, once immersed in water, have reappeared due to the lack of rain this winter. Apparently water is being hauled into Barcelona to relieve the drought conditions. Again, I will have to further research this issue and its impact upon locals. Mini Laptop and Intl Driver’s Permit

Eeet’s here! Yipeee! (Sorry about the poor eee humor.) My Asus Eee Pc Surf 2G in sky blue arrived yesterday and I immediately pulled it from the box, popped in the battery, plugged it in, and tested it out. I’m in love with my Eeetsy laptop. Its robin egg blue cover is seasonally fashionable and the keyboard is much easier to use than I had imagined. The odd placement of the shift and return keys are the only things I’ve had to adjust to. Windows users, don’t read on, unless you are ready to be disappointed. Linux is lightening fast and intuitive to use. On my Eee, I’m connected to the internet in mere seconds, instead of the agonizing minutes I encounter when signing on with my asertec laptop with windows xp and norton antivirus. So far I’m very happy with my eee; more detailed review to come, so check back. Another thing to cross off my to-do list is to obtain an international driver’s permit. I walked into an AAA office today and handed over my application, two passport photos, and check. In return, I received a booklet that has my license in several languages, along with my photo. I was initially dreading the experience. I think because I was unfairly equating the AAA with DMV. I can now tell you, there are no number-ticket machines at AAA, no scary people behind the counter, and no long lines! I was in and out in approximately five minutes.

International Driver’s Permit

Today’s goal is to obtain an international driver’s permit. In hand are the required passport photos, check, and application. Now, I must take all of these items, and myself, into an AAA office. Seems easy enough, but somehow I’ve managed to put this off for months. Spain requires this translated version of your driver’s license in order to rent a car, which I will be doing in Tarragona. Ordinarily I opt for public transportation, but buses and trains only take me so far into my journey. To get to Torroja del Priorat, the village at the geographical center of the Priorat, I must drive into the rugged countryside.

Eeets in dee post!

I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of my Asus Eee PC 2G! Faced with the reality of squeezing two weeks of clothes and electronics into my LL Bean Celia daypack, I realized that my laptop would dominate too much space. After logging countless hours online, I discovered the Asus EEE PC mini laptop. Measuring in at a mere 8.9″x6.5″x1.4″ and weighing 2 pounds, it will certainly take up less space than my 13″ Averatec notebook. With built-in wifi and Open Office suite, I’ll be able to stay connected while typing up notes on my journey.

Two Dozen Days and Counting!

Wine and Travel and More Wine!

Feeling panicked about not having a career, but rather an endless string of dead-end jobs, I enrolled in the Editing Certificate program at the University of Washington. I’m now in my last semester and will be finished the first week of June. To celebrate, I’m traveling to France and Spain to discover passionate, indie winemakers in Bordeaux and the Priorat. Armed with notepad and pen, I plan to collect interviews and insights that I can share with you, my audience.
